A Labuan Bajo private driver is a day, measured — not a car, rented.
We sell blocks of hours — 5, 10, 12, or a run of days across Flores — with the driver, the fuel, the parking and the driver’s own meals already inside the block. Everything that usually surprises people at the end of a trip is named openly here instead: waiting hours, pre-dawn starts, the empty return leg, and what a driver costs to feed and house on the road. The figures behind them are on your written quote, not invented into a tariff we cannot honour.

Hours & rules as of 2026Set your pickup and your finish. We will tell you honestly what that day is.
This measures your day against the same rule the drivers work to. It will tell you which block you land in, how many overtime hours you are asking for, whether a pre-dawn supplement applies, and — if the route you picked does not fit the hours you set — it will say so and send you to the right page instead of quietly selling you a day that cannot be driven.

Figures in USD are indicative and confirmed on WhatsApp against your actual dates; we do not print a grid we cannot honour in high season, and we would rather say that here than surprise you later. Inside every block: the driver, the fuel, the parking and the driver’s own meals. You are never asked to buy the driver lunch mid-day; that is already in the number. The long version: what’s included in a private driver price.
Overtime: charged per hour past the block you booked, at the rate written on your confirmation before the day starts. The clock runs from pickup to the moment you are back — not from when the driver left his house.
Pre-dawn start: any pickup before 05:00 carries a supplement. The driver has to leave his own home well before that to reach you; that is real work and we charge it openly rather than folding it into a vague “peak” price. The amount is on your written quote — we do not publish a fixed figure.
Above 19 passengers: there is no single vehicle. Beyond the Elf we run a convoy on one manifest, and the desk quotes it as a convoy rather than pretending a bigger bus exists in Labuan Bajo.
Bags: the bag column is a planning rule of thumb, not a measurement. We have not measured boot volumes and we do not publish litres or “luggage units”. If you are travelling with dive gear, hard cases or a surfboard, tell the desk what you actually have and we will put you in the right class.

These are planning estimates, not measurements and not a promise: rain, road works, a market day in Ruteng and a slow truck on a switchback all move them. Where a destination does not fit a day block, the ledger says so instead of selling you a day that ends at midnight. Where we have no figure worth publishing, the row says so rather than guessing at you.

Sheet 05 / 10 — driver standards
What your driver will do, and what he will not
This is the part nobody publishes. A driver is not a licensed guide, and pretending otherwise is how people end up disappointed at a park gate. Here is the line, drawn plainly.
He will
- Know the Trans-Flores road, including which section is slow this month
- Wait at trailheads, harbours and airports for as long as the block runs
- Carry your bags and your dive gear, and keep water cold in the car
- Stop at villages, markets and viewpoints you ask for on the road
- Translate at warungs, fuel stops and checkpoints
- Adjust the day as it goes, and tell you when a change costs overtime
He will not
- Trek to Wae Rebo with you — the walk is yours; he waits at Denge
- Act as a licensed guide inside protected areas, where a ranger or guide is required
- Drive past his rest limit because the day slipped; a tired driver on a mountain road is not a saving
- Take a cash side-deal that changes what you already agreed with the desk
- Sell you a boat, a ticket or a tour in the car
- Promise a sunrise that the road cannot deliver
We do not publish graded English tiers, because we do not test or certify our drivers’ English. What we can say plainly is that the drivers we send handle directions, times, food, prices and safety.
If conversation on a long drive matters to you, say so when you ask for a quote. The desk will tell you what the driver actually free on your dates can do — in writing, before you pay — rather than selling you a label.
However good a driver’s English, he is not a substitute for a licensed guide inside a national park, where a ranger or licensed guide is required by the park itself. See the English-speaking driver page.
Tipping. A tip for a good day is appreciated, and it is never obligatory and never added to your invoice. We do not publish a suggested amount or a range — what you give, if anything, is entirely yours to decide, and nothing about your day changes either way. A long day is 12 hours on the clock, not 16. Overland legs are split so nobody drives the Bajawa road on four hours of sleep.

Overland pricing hides two things almost everywhere: what the driver eats, and where he sleeps. Both are real costs, both are on your quote as their own lines, and the empty return leg — the drive home with nobody in the car — is stated per town rather than discovered at the end.

Why the empty leg is charged: if you fly out of Ende or Maumere, the car and the driver still have to come back across the island with nobody in it. That is a day or more of work and fuel. We put it on the quote as its own line so you can see exactly what you are paying for, and so you can compare a one-way drop against a round trip honestly.
No published fee schedule: we do not print per-day meal allowances, per-night room rates or a fixed empty-leg tariff on this page, because they move with the town, the season and the route. They are named in figures on your written quote before you pay anything — that is where the numbers belong.
Who books the driver’s room: we do, unless you would rather add him to your own booking. It is a separate room, always — a driver sleeping in the car before a mountain day is not a cost saving anyone should accept.

Who you are actually booking
Labuan Bajo Private Driver is operated under Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group, working in Flores since 2015. The fleet is small and locally run — with-driver is the local norm here, not an upsell, because the roads, the checkpoints and the parking all work better with someone who drives them daily.
Two things we will not do: publish a rating we did not earn, and claim availability we have not checked. June to September genuinely sells out — the honest version is in booking a driver in high season. If the car you want is gone, the desk will say so and offer the class that is actually free.

Six questions people ask before they send money
Is waiting time charged separately?
No. Waiting inside your block — at the harbour during a Komodo boat day, at a trailhead, at lunch — is already paid for. You only pay more if the day runs past the block you booked, and then it is overtime per hour at the rate written on your confirmation before the day started.
Do I have to buy the driver’s meals?
Not on a day block: his own meals are inside the number. On multi-day work his daily meal allowance and his room appear as their own lines on your quote, because they are real costs on the road and hiding them inside a round figure only makes the total harder to check.
What counts as a pre-dawn start, and why does it cost more?
Any pickup before 05:00. The driver has to leave his own house well before that to reach you, so a 04:30 pickup starts his day earlier still. We charge a stated supplement — named in figures on your written quote, not published as a fixed tariff here — rather than pretending the hour is free. Kelimutu sunrise and early flights are the usual reasons.
If I get dropped in Ruteng or Ende and fly out, do I pay for the drive back?
Yes, and it is on the quote as its own line. The car and the driver still have to cross the island with nobody in it — roughly 4 empty hours from Ruteng, 8–10 from Bajawa, about three days back from Ende, and five to seven days from Maumere. Seeing it as a line lets you compare a one-way drop against a round trip properly.
How much English will the driver actually have?
We do not publish graded English tiers, because we do not test or certify our drivers’ English. Tell the desk how much English matters to you and it will tell you, in writing before you pay, what the driver actually free on your dates can do. No driver, however fluent, is a licensed guide inside a national park, where a ranger or a licensed guide is required by the park itself.
Is tipping expected?
Appreciated, never obligatory, and never added to your invoice. We publish no suggested amount and no range — what you give, if anything, is entirely your call. If you would rather not, nothing about your day changes.
