Can you drive into Komodo National Park?
No. The park is an island group in the Flores Sea — Komodo, Rinca, Padar and dozens of smaller islands — separated from mainland Flores by open water. As of 2026 no ferry carries private cars to the ranger posts at Loh Liang (Komodo) or Loh Buaya (Rinca), and no tourist vehicles operate inside the park. You move by boat between anchorages and on foot with a ranger.
Anyone selling a “car tour of Komodo National Park” is really selling a boat with a transfer attached. The land side matters — it just stops at the water’s edge.
What does a private car actually do on a Komodo park day?
- The dawn harbour run. Most day boats and liveaboards ask you to board between 05:30 and 07:00. Hotels along the ridge, in Batu Cermin or on the south road are 10–25 minutes from the piers, and taxis are thin at that hour.

- Waiting or return dispatch. Either the driver waits at the marina with your day bag and town clothes, or stands down and comes back on your call. Waiting costs more; dispatch costs less but needs 20–30 minutes of notice.
- The post-cruise pickup. Day boats usually return between 16:00 and 19:00, and arrival times move with wind and swell — a driver holding your number beats the queue on the harbour road.

Where do Komodo boats leave from, and how far is that by car?
Departures are spread across the Labuan Bajo waterfront rather than one terminal. Speedboats and day boats usually leave from the town harbour jetties on the waterfront road; some liveaboards and phinisi board from marina pontoons or a jetty a short drive from the centre. Your boat operator names the exact pier the day before — forward that message and the pickup time is set from it.
Practical driving times, as of 2026: waterfront hotels 3–8 minutes, hillside and Batu Cermin hotels 10–20 minutes, Komodo Airport (LBJ) to the harbour roughly 10–15 minutes off-peak. What about park entry and ranger fees?
Park fees are not paid to your driver and never should be. Entry to Komodo National Park is collected by the park authority and its appointed system — in practice, most travellers pay through their boat operator, who arranges tickets before or on arrival at the ranger post.
As of 2026 it is not a single number: it combines an entrance ticket, a ranger-guide fee at each island, and separate activity or conservation components for diving, snorkelling and trekking, with different rates on weekdays, weekends and public holidays, and different rates for Indonesian and foreign visitors.
