A Flores overland private driver from Labuan Bajo is a multi-day driver-guide service: one English-speaking driver and one vehicle stay with your group for the entire Trans-Flores route — Labuan Bajo, Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende, Kelimutu, Moni and on to Maumere. Indicative rates run from around USD 85–100 per day (indicative as of 2026; every trip is quoted individually). Labuan Bajo Private Driver is operated under Komodo Luxury, part of Juara Holding Group, operating from Bali across Indonesia since 2015.
What does a Trans-Flores driver-guide actually do?
The Trans-Flores highway is one narrow road that climbs, drops and switchbacks for roughly 650–700 km between Labuan Bajo and Maumere. Over three to six days, the value of a driver-guide is far more than the steering wheel:
- Reading the road. Landslide-prone cuttings, market mornings that close a village street, fog on the Ruteng pass, and afternoon rain that makes the descent toward Ende slower than any map suggests.
- Pacing. Sensible driving blocks with coffee, fuel and toilet stops instead of one exhausting push. Most overland days run 4–7 hours behind the wheel plus sightseeing.
- Village etiquette. Where to ask permission before entering a traditional compound, when a customary contribution is expected, what to wear, and when photographs are not welcome.
- Interpretation. Plain-English context for the spider-web rice fields at Cancar, the megalithic layout of Bena, the three-coloured Kelimutu lakes, and everyday Manggarai, Ngada, Lio and Sikka life along the way.
- Re-routing. If a road is blocked or the crater is clouded in at 6am, your driver reshuffles the day and calls ahead to the next guesthouse.
It is the same driver, the same vehicle and the same phone number from pickup to drop-off. If you only need a single day around town, our English-speaking private driver service covers that separately.
What is a realistic Trans-Flores itinerary?
Most overland guests take four to six days. A common five-day shape, travelling west to east:
- Day 1 — Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (about 4–5 hours driving): Lembor rice plains, the Cancar spider-web fields, a cool highland night at roughly 1,200 m.
- Day 2 — Ruteng to Bajawa (about 4–5 hours): Ranamese lake, the Aimere coast, then Bena traditional village under the Inerie volcano.
- Day 3 — Bajawa to Moni (about 5–6 hours): the blue-stone beach at Penggajawa, Ende town, evening arrival at the foot of Kelimutu.
- Day 4 — Kelimutu sunrise, then Moni to Maumere (about 3–4 hours once the crater walk is done).
- Day 5 — Maumere: coastal ikat-weaving villages, the old Sikka church, drop-off at Frans Seda Airport.
Adding Wae Rebo needs one extra day and a trek on foot from Denge, with the vehicle waiting at the trailhead. The route also runs east to west if your flights favour it, and individual legs can be booked alone — see Labuan Bajo to Kelimutu.
Which vehicle suits the Trans-Flores road?
Two classes handle this route well, both supplied with driver.
| Vehicle | Comfortable for | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Fortuner (SUV) | 4–5 guests plus luggage | Couples and small groups — higher clearance, steadier on steep, rough or gravel sections and on the Wae Rebo approach |
| Toyota HiAce | 6–10 guests plus luggage | Families and larger groups who need room to stretch out on long driving days |
We do not recommend small city MPVs for the full crossing — the mix of gradient, luggage and road surface is unkind to them, and it shows by day three. Full specifications are on the Toyota Fortuner with driver page.
How do you book a Flores overland driver?
- Message us on WhatsApp at +62 811-3810-5742 or email sales@komodoluxury.com with your dates, group size, arrival point and how many days you can give the road.
- We propose a route — a day-by-day plan with driving hours, suggested overnight towns and the vehicle we recommend for your group size.
- You receive a written quote covering the daily rate, the return run and anything itinerary-specific.
- Driver assignment. You get the driver’s name and direct number before arrival, plus a pickup time for your hotel, the harbour or Komodo Airport.
- On the road. Our Labuan Bajo desk stays reachable for the whole trip, not just at booking.
Book two to four weeks ahead for the July–September and December–January peaks, when experienced English-speaking drivers are committed early.
How much does a Flores private driver cost per day?
Indicative pricing as of 2026 starts from roughly USD 85–100 per day for an SUV with driver on the Trans-Flores route, with HiAce and longer or more remote itineraries quoted higher. All pricing is quote-based and confirmed in writing before you commit. The figures here are a planning band, not a fixed tariff — they move with fuel prices, season and route length. Current bands for every vehicle are kept on our private driver price list.
The daily rate normally covers: the vehicle, fuel for the agreed itinerary, the driver’s service for the day, and standard parking or road charges.
The daily rate normally does not cover:
- Driver accommodation and meals on multi-day trips — usually a modest daily allowance, or you book his room alongside yours
- Entrance tickets, national park fees and customary village contributions
- The one-way return run — if you finish in Maumere, the vehicle still has to drive back to Labuan Bajo, so that repositioning is added as extra days or a set return fee
- Your own hotels, meals, trekking guides and boat trips
We would rather state the return run openly than surprise you with it at the end. Ask for the all-in figure and we will quote the crossing with repositioning included.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for the Trans-Flores route?
Four days is the practical minimum from Labuan Bajo to Maumere with Kelimutu included. Five or six days is far more comfortable and leaves room for Bena, Wae Rebo or a slower coastal stretch. Three days is possible, but it becomes a driving marathon with very little time out of the car.
Do your drivers speak English?
Overland drivers are assigned specifically for conversational English and route familiarity. Fluency does vary between individuals, so tell us if you want the strongest English speaker available and we will match accordingly, or add a dedicated guide alongside the driver.
Can the driver take us one way so we fly out of Maumere?
Yes, and it is the most common pattern. Flights from Frans Seda Airport in Maumere connect onward via Kupang or Denpasar. Just remember that the return run for the vehicle is part of the cost of a one-way crossing.
Is the Trans-Flores road manageable in the rainy season?
It stays open year-round, but roughly December to March brings heavier rain, occasional landslide clearance and slower going. We build extra buffer into wet-season itineraries and re-sequence days rather than push on after dark.
