A Flores overland package is a multi-day private drive along the Trans-Flores highway with your own vehicle and driver — most commonly Labuan Bajo → Ruteng → Bajawa → Ende → Kelimutu → Maumere. Labuan Bajo Private Driver runs it as packaged 3-day, 4-day and 5-day itineraries in an SUV or Toyota HiAce with an English-speaking driver, with fixed overnight towns and the option to finish one-way and fly out of Ende or Maumere. Pricing is quoted per trip in USD on an indicative per-day basis, because the real cost driver is not distance but whether the car has to drive back empty.
What is included in a packaged overland trip?
This is a self-guided overland journey rather than a group tour. The package covers the vehicle, an experienced local driver, fuel, tolls and parking, the driver’s own meals and accommodation on the road, and a day-by-day route agreed in writing before departure. Your driver handles the road, the timing and the local logistics; you decide how long to stand at a viewpoint.
Paid separately: your hotels and meals, park and village entrance fees, local guide fees, and any domestic flight. Wae Rebo and several Ngada villages ask visitors to be received by a customary guide; your driver arranges it and you pay the village directly.
Which package lengths do you run, as of 2026?
3-day package: highlands only, or a hard push to Kelimutu
Three days works in two shapes. The comfortable version stays in the Manggarai and Ngada highlands — Cancar’s spiderweb rice fields, Ruteng, Bena below Mount Inerie — and turns back. The demanding version reaches Kelimutu but asks for six to eight hours of driving on each of the first two days — take it only if the crater lakes are non-negotiable.
4-day package: the version we recommend most
One extra night changes the trip completely. You break the drive at Ruteng, spend a real morning at Bena and the Mengeruda hot springs, and reach Moni before dark rather than after it. Four days also absorbs the delays Flores roads produce in practice — road works, a market blocking a village street, a landslide clearance. Day four is the Kelimutu sunrise, then a drop at Ende or a run on to Maumere.
5-day package: Wae Rebo, or a slower coast
Five days makes room for the Wae Rebo trek — drive to Denge, roughly three hours on foot each way, one night in a traditional conical house — or for a slower south-coast day taking in the blue-stone beach at Penggajawa before Kelimutu. It is also the only length with genuine slack in it if a road closes.
How much does a Flores overland package cost?
We quote per trip rather than from a fixed price list, because the honest variable is the return leg. A one-way drop at Maumere means your driver spends two further days bringing an empty car home, and that is priced into the package as a visible line, never buried. Loops back to Labuan Bajo cost less per day but need more days.
| Configuration | Indicative per-day rate (USD) |
|---|---|
| SUV, up to 3–4 guests with luggage — loop back to Labuan Bajo | approx. USD 120–160 per day |
| SUV — one-way drop at Ende or Maumere | approx. USD 150–200 per day |
| Toyota HiAce, larger groups and luggage — loop or one-way | approx. USD 180–260 per day |
These figures are indicative guidance for 2026, not a booked rate. Peak season — June to September, Christmas and New Year — and fuel movements move the number. Send your dates and group size and you will get a written quote with inclusions and exclusions listed line by line, locked before departure.
How do you book?
Message us on WhatsApp with four things: your arrival date in Labuan Bajo, the number of travellers and how much luggage, how many days you can give the road, and which airport you want to fly out of. We reply with a day-by-day route, a vehicle recommendation and a fixed USD total. Nothing is charged to hold a date, and we will say plainly if your plan is too tight.
Once confirmed, we assign the vehicle and driver, share the driver’s name and number before you land, and suggest hotels in Ruteng, Bajawa and Moni if you want them. Payment is normally a deposit to confirm with the balance settled at the start of the trip. To test the service with a single day first, our private driver in Labuan Bajo day rate uses the same drivers and cars.
What should you know before committing?
Three things we would rather say up front. Driving hours are real — the Trans-Flores highway is paved but climbs and switchbacks constantly, so 130 km can take four to five hours, and anyone prone to motion sickness should plan for it. The wet season, roughly December to March, brings landslides and washouts, especially on the Ruteng–Bajawa section; we still run overland packages then, with buffer time built in and the right to reroute. And this is a driver-guide service, not a licensed trekking operation: for Wae Rebo and Kelimutu the on-site guides are local and independent.
Our drivers speak working English and know the corridor from repetition rather than a script. For someone who can also give you the Manggarai and Ngada context along the way, ask for our English-speaking driver-guide when you enquire.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly out of Ende or Maumere instead of returning to Labuan Bajo?
Yes, and most overland guests do. Both airports connect onward through Indonesian domestic hubs. Tell us the airport at enquiry stage, because the one-way charge belongs in the original quote, not as a later add-on. Book your flight for the afternoon of the final day or the next morning — a dawn departure after a Kelimutu sunrise leaves no margin.
Do I need a 4WD for the overland route?
Not for the main highway. A comfortable SUV handles the corridor year-round. 4WD only becomes relevant for the access road to Denge before the Wae Rebo trek and for a few side roads after heavy rain — we will say so directly if your route needs it.
How many people fit comfortably over four or five days?
An SUV is comfortable for two to three adults with luggage on a multi-day run, even though it seats more for short transfers. From four upward with suitcases, take the Toyota HiAce with driver — luggage space, not seat count, is the limiting factor over five days.
Can the package start straight after a Komodo boat trip?
Yes — a common pattern is two or three days at sea, then the drive east, with pickup timed around your harbour arrival. It also combines with our Wae Rebo tour by car as a front or back extension.
