It is roughly 650 km of mountain highway, so the plan only works if you treat driving time as fixed and sightseeing as the flexible part. What does a 5 day flores overland itinerary include?
Flores has one spine road, the Trans-Flores highway, and this trip follows it east. Every leg below is paved but narrow, with continuous switchbacks through the Manggarai and Ngada highlands. The hours shown are realistic driving time as of 2026, excluding stops, and assume dry-season conditions.

Day 1: Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, and the Cancar spiderweb
Leave Labuan Bajo by 08:00. The road climbs steadily through Lembor and the Manggarai rice belt, and by early afternoon you are at 1,200 metres. The spiderweb rice fields at Cancar sit about 17 km before Ruteng, which makes them a natural late-afternoon stop rather than a detour. A local guide walks you up the viewpoint hill for a small fee; the radial lodok field pattern reads properly from above, and light after 15:00 is far better than midday.
If you left early enough, Liang Bua cave, where the Homo floresiensis remains were excavated, adds about 90 minutes including the side road. Do not attempt both Liang Bua and Cancar unless you departed by 07:00. Ruteng is cold at night by Indonesian standards, often in the high teens Celsius, so pack one warm layer for days one and two.
Day 2: Ruteng to Bajawa via Ranamese and the south coast
This is the most scenic leg and the one people underestimate. Ranamese lake sits around 45 minutes east of Ruteng on the road toward Borong, at roughly 1,200 metres, and costs you 30 minutes for the viewpoint and a short walk. From Borong the highway meets the south coast, runs east through Aimere, then climbs hard into the Ngada highlands to Bajawa at about 1,100 metres.
Budget the full 5.5 hours. The Borong to Aimere stretch is one long coastal curve, and the Aimere climb is where underpowered vehicles struggle with four passengers and luggage. Arrive Bajawa mid-afternoon and spend the remaining daylight at the Malanage or Soa hot springs rather than squeezing Bena into the same evening.
Day 3: Bena megalithic village, the Blue Stone Beach, Wologai and into Moni
Bena is 19 km south of Bajawa, roughly 45 minutes each way on a narrow side road. Go at 07:00, spend an hour among the megalithic ngadhu and bhaga ancestor structures while the village is quiet, and be back on the highway by 09:30. If the day starts running late, Bena is the stop worth protecting.
The rest of the day is the long haul east through Boawae and Nangapanda. The Blue Stone Beach at Penggajawa, where the shoreline is covered in polished blue-grey stones that are collected and exported, sits on the coast road roughly 30 to 40 km before Ende and needs only 20 minutes. Past Ende the road turns north into the mountains, and Wologai traditional village near Detusoko is about 12 km before Moni, a 30 to 40 minute stop that fits without pressure. You reach Moni before dark, which matters because this section is unlit and busy with motorbikes.
Day 4: Kelimutu sunrise, then the run to Maumere
The driver collects you in Moni at about 04:00. It is a 30-minute drive to the Kelimutu parking area, then a 20 to 30 minute walk on a paved path to the summit viewpoint. The three crater lakes change colour over months and years through natural mineral and gas activity, so nobody, including your driver, can promise you a specific colour combination on a specific morning. Cloud is common; arriving early gives you the best window.
Back in Moni by 08:30 for breakfast, then Moni to Maumere is a comfortable 2.5 to 3 hours descending to the north coast. If you have appetite left, Koka Beach and the Sikka weaving village both sit close to the highway on the way in. Overnight Maumere.
Day 5: Maumere and the flight out
Frans Seda Airport (MOF) is 15 minutes from central Maumere, and most departures connect through Kupang or Denpasar. Use the morning for the coast or the Ledalero museum collection, then let your driver handle the airport run. Why does the one-way drop cost more?
Most published versions of a 5 day flores overland itinerary quietly skip this part. When you finish in Maumere, your driver and vehicle are 650 km from home with no passengers. He drives back over two days, paying fuel, meals and a night on the road. That empty return is real cost, and an honest operator quotes it as a separate one-way drop fee rather than burying it.
Two consequences follow. A Labuan Bajo to Maumere overland is always priced above the same number of days looping back to Labuan Bajo. Which vehicle class survives the route?
The Trans-Flores highway is sealed for its whole length, but it is a mountain road with constant gradient changes, and vehicle choice decides whether day two is pleasant or miserable. For two to four passengers with luggage, an Innova-class MPV is the sensible floor, and a Fortuner-class SUV gives you noticeably better climbing power and clearance on the Bena and Wologai side roads. Small city MPVs are legal on the route and technically make it, but they run out of engine on the Aimere climb and give a harsher ride over five days.
For five to eight passengers a Hiace-class van works well on the highway, though it is tight on village access roads and needs a driver who knows those turns. Whatever the class, the driver is the non-negotiable part: this route rewards someone who has driven it repeatedly, knows which warungs are safe at lunch and can read the weather on the Kelimutu approach. Budget separately for your own hotels, meals, Kelimutu national park entrance, village donations and local guide fees at Cancar, Bena and Wologai, and any domestic flight.
Practical notes before you commit
- Season. The route is drivable year-round. From roughly December to March, rain adds time to every leg and landslip repairs occasionally reroute traffic, so build slack into flight connections.
- Cash. ATMs are reliable in Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere, thin everywhere between. Village entrance donations and guide fees are cash only.
- Altitude and cold. Ruteng, Bajawa and the Kelimutu summit are genuinely cold before dawn. One fleece and a light rain shell are enough.
- Flights. Do not book a same-day connection out of Maumere on day four. Kelimutu mornings and mountain roads do not tolerate tight airline timing.
- Direction. East-bound, as described, beats west-bound: you gain daylight on the long day-three leg and finish at an airport.
